Tourists advised to delay trips to northern areas due to monsoon risks

ISLAMABAD: As the monsoon season approaches, experts are urging caution for tourists planning trips to Pakistan’s northern areas, which are expected to face heavy rainfall, landslides, and flash floods, increasing the risks for travelers.

The northern regions, renowned for their breathtaking landscapes and adventure opportunities, are prone to natural disasters during the monsoon months. The heavy rainfall expected in the coming months could trigger landslides, flash floods, and disruption to transportation networks, putting tourists at significant risk.

Dr. Sadique Ali, a weather expert, strongly advised against visiting these areas during the monsoon season, stating, “We strongly advise tourists to postpone their trips to the northern areas during the monsoon season as the risks associated with traveling during this time far outweigh the benefits. Landslides and flash floods can occur without warning, and tourists may find themselves stranded or worse.”

Dr. Ali emphasized that avoiding travel during this period would help minimize risks and ensure tourists’ safety.

Health expert Muhammad Nazeer, who also commented on the situation, advised those who still intend to visit the northern areas to take necessary precautions. “Tourists should stay informed about weather conditions, travel with guides who are familiar with the terrain, and be prepared for unexpected situations,” he stated. He also recommended that visitors have a contingency plan in place in case of emergencies.

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a public warning, advising both tourists and locals to take precautions and stay updated on weather reports. The NDMA indicated that the northern regions are expected to face substantial rainfall throughout the monsoon season, which typically spans from July to September.

A spokesperson from the NDMA emphasized the importance of vigilance, urging people to avoid traveling to areas prone to landslides and flash floods. “We are working closely with local authorities to ensure that tourists are well-informed about the risks and take the necessary precautions,” the spokesperson said.
