ISLAMABAD: Former Israeli Deputy Minister of Defence, Meir Masri, has issued a controversial threat against Pakistan’s nuclear programme in a social media post, drawing widespread condemnation.
Masri, who remains influential within Israeli political circles as a member of the Labour Party’s Central Committee, posted on X (formerly Twitter) in both Arabic and Urdu, stating, “After Iran’s campaign, we may seek to dismantle Pakistan’s nuclear programme.”
While Masri currently holds no official position in the Israeli government, his remarks have raised alarm, especially in light of rising regional tensions. He further added, “Pakistan is not far from Iran. Your understanding is sufficient,” implying a threat directed at Pakistan’s nuclear capabilities.
The post sparked a strong reaction from social media users, many of whom rallied behind Pakistan, condemning Masri’s remarks as inflammatory and unwarranted. Some emphasized that such threats only serve to strengthen Pakistan’s resolve and unity. Others reminded Masri of Pakistan’s nuclear deterrent and the country’s diplomatic restraint in the face of previous provocations.
In response to the escalating rhetoric, Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar issued a stern warning to Israel on Monday, saying, “Our message is very clear for Israel: Dare not look at Pakistan.”
Dar reassured the public that Pakistan remains on high alert and has the strength to respond decisively to any act of aggression. He also referenced the national unity shown by Pakistanis during past confrontations, particularly with India, reaffirming the nation’s resolve to defend its sovereignty.
This exchange of words comes amid rising regional tensions following recent Israeli and Iranian missile strikes. Iranian state media reported that missile strikes in Israel caused significant damage, including a direct hit near the Soroka Medical Centre in Be’er Sheva.
In retaliation, Israel carried out airstrikes on Iran’s Khondab nuclear facility, which had been evacuated beforehand to avoid radiation risks. Meanwhile, in Holon, near Tel Aviv, a missile strike severely injured one person and wounded dozens more.
Amid these developments, rumors circulated on social media claiming Pakistan had threatened to launch a nuclear strike on Israel in the event of an attack on Iran. The Pakistani government categorically denied these claims, reinforcing its commitment to peace while maintaining a strong defense posture in the region.
