Pakistan, Azerbaijan discuss regional security and defence cooperation

Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir held a meeting with Azerbaijani Minister of Defence Colonel General Hasanov Zakir Asgar Oglu in Lachin on Wednesday to discuss regional security and defence collaboration. The discussion covered issues of mutual interest and explored strategies to strengthen military cooperation between the two countries, according to a statement from the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR).

The army chief expressed appreciation for the strong bilateral ties between Pakistan and Azerbaijan, reaffirming Islamabad’s commitment to expanding defence relations. The meeting took place during Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s ongoing visit to Azerbaijan, where he is attending the Pakistan-Turkiye-Azerbaijan Trilateral Summit.

Field Marshal Munir is part of the prime minister’s high-level delegation, which includes Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, Information Minister Attaullah Tarar, and Special Assistant to the Prime Minister Tariq Fatemi. The delegation’s visit follows a recent military confrontation with India, prompting renewed diplomatic engagement with regional allies.

On Tuesday, PM Shehbaz met Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and thanked him for supporting Pakistan during the four-day conflict with India, sparked by missile attacks from New Delhi. The premier acknowledged the solidarity shown by Azerbaijan’s leadership and public during the crisis.

Both leaders reviewed bilateral ties and expressed satisfaction with progress in political, defence, economic, and cultural cooperation. Azerbaijan agreed to send a delegation for talks on advancing investment in Pakistan, with discussions expected to begin in the near future.
