KARACHI: A prolonged disruption in water supply has left large parts of Karachi without access to piped water for the past 25 days, forcing residents to depend on costly water tankers.
The shortage has affected areas including Korangi, Landhi, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Jamshed Road, Liaquatabad, Nazimabad, Dastgir, Federal B Area, and Baldia Town. With water demand rising and no improvement in municipal supply, frustration among citizens has escalated.
According to a spokesperson for the Water Corporation, a power failure at Gharo Pumping Station on Saturday morning prevented the delivery of 30 million gallons of water to the city. Power outages at the NIPA and NEK pumping stations further worsened the situation, particularly in Gulshan-e-Iqbal and adjoining localities.
In District Central, residents gathered to protest outside the Sakhi Hassan Hydrant, blocking roads and halting water supply operations at the facility. Member of the Sindh Assembly Jamal Ahmed joined the demonstrators, who complained of complete water outages in their neighborhoods for several consecutive days.
The protest disrupted tanker operations for several hours, exacerbating the crisis as the city continues to struggle with limited water resources and infrastructure failures.
