Health authorities and district administration in Rawalpindi have issued an official heatwave alert amid soaring temperatures. The city’s major hospitals are witnessing an increase in patients suffering from heat-related conditions such as diarrhea, eye irritation, skin problems, nosebleeds, respiratory issues, headaches, vomiting, and sunstroke.
Between 2,500 and 3,000 patients, including adults and children, are being treated daily at three main allied hospitals, while local clinics are also overwhelmed. Medical officials have advised the public to avoid outdoor activities during peak sunlight, wear dark green sunglasses and masks, carry cold water, use wet towels, and keep their heads covered.
They cautioned against consuming street foods like shaved ice, ice cream, fried snacks, and spicy items, and advised drinking lemon water regularly while avoiding oily foods. Immediate medical consultation is recommended for sunstroke or nosebleeds.
In response, the education department has allowed students to wear light clothing and instructed schools to ensure clean drinking water and functioning fans. Due to extreme heat, summer vacations may begin a week earlier, starting May 26, as student attendance has already declined.
