President Xi calls on China, Brazil to promote Global South unity, cooperation

BEIJING: Chinese President Xi Jinping on Tuesday called on China and Brazil to advance the building of the China-Brazil community with a shared future, deepen the alignment of their development strategies and work together to promote unity and cooperation of the Global South.

Xi made the remarks during talks with Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who is on a state visit to China, in Beijing.

Standing at a new historical starting point, China and Brazil should uphold strategic mutual trust, consolidate the foundation of the China-Brazil community with a shared future and uphold mutual respect, mutual benefit and win-win cooperation, said Xi.

He also called for mutual support on issues concerning each other’s core interests and major concerns and strengthening all-round exchanges at all levels to ensure the long-term, healthy and stable development of bilateral ties.

China and Brazil should expand cooperation, give full play to the role of various cooperation mechanisms between the two countries and enhance cooperation in traditional fields such as infrastructure, agriculture and energy, he said, calling for expanding cooperation in new areas such as energy transformation, aerospace, the digital economy and artificial intelligence.

Taking the holding of the China-Brazil Year of Culture next year as an opportunity, the two sides should enhance cooperation in fields like culture, education, tourism and media to provide more convenience for personnel exchanges between the two sides, he said.

He urged China and Brazil, as two major developing countries, to enhance coordination and cooperation in multilateral mechanisms and uphold multilateralism and safeguarding international economic and trade order, he said, calling for opposing unilateralism, protectionism and bullying.

Hailing the unbreakable ties between the two countries, Lula said Brazil is ready to work with China to deepen strategic cooperation, promote the building of the Brazil-China community with a shared future and build a more just, peaceful and prosperous world.

Brazil will align its development strategy with the Belt and Road Initiative, deepen cooperation in fields such as the economy, trade, infrastructure, aerospace and finance, and expand youth and cultural exchanges, Lula said.

Under the current circumstances, it is of great importance to firmly defend multilateralism, he said, adding that protectionism and the abuse of tariffs cannot bring development and prosperity but will only cause chaos.

Brazil is willing to strengthen strategic cooperation with China in international affairs, jointly safeguard the common interests of the Global South, and uphold international fairness and justice, he said.

The two heads of state also exchanged views on the Ukraine crisis. They agreed that China and Brazil should enhance communication and coordination, give full play to the role of the “Friends of Peace” group in the crisis, and support Russia and Ukraine in launching direct dialogue, aiming to continue to play a constructive role in resolving the crisis together with other Global South countries.

They witnessed the signing of a series of cooperation documents in areas such as technology, agriculture, the digital economy and finance following their talks. They also met the press together.
