ISTANBUL: Senator Irfan Siddiqui, senior leader of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), paid rich tribute to Abdur Rehman Peshawari, describing him as a timeless emblem of the deep-rooted brotherhood between Pakistan and Türkiye during a ceremony in Istanbul marking the 100th anniversary of Peshawari’s martyrdom.
The event, organized by Istanbul University in collaboration with the Yunus Emre Institute, drew a distinguished audience of scholars, diplomats, and officials. Senator Siddiqui was invited by the Turkish government and Istanbul University to participate in the commemoration of Peshawari, who is revered in Türkiye for his critical role in the Turkish War of Independence.
Speaking at the event, Siddiqui called Peshawari a “shared son of Pakistan and Türkiye” whose contributions are “etched in the hearts of the Turkish people.” He said that Peshawari’s legacy symbolizes not only a shared history but also enduring Islamic solidarity between the two nations.
“Even after a hundred years, Türkiye has not forgotten this courageous Pakistani who fought for their freedom and earned the nation’s love and respect,” said Senator Siddiqui.
He also highlighted how President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has repeatedly acknowledged Peshawari’s heroic efforts during his visits to Pakistan, reinforcing the bond between the two countries.
Other speakers included Dr. Khalil Tokar, vice chancellors from Sindh Madressatul Islam University and Shah Abdul Latif University, the Vice Rector of Istanbul University, Pakistan’s Ambassador to Türkiye Yousaf Junaid, and Istanbul’s Vice Governor.
Earlier in the day, Senator Siddiqui led a Pakistani delegation in official meetings with Turkish counterparts, expressing Pakistan’s gratitude for Türkiye’s unwavering support during times of regional strain—including Türkiye’s recent solidarity during the Pehalgam crisis.
The ceremony concluded with renewed calls to honor historical figures who have bridged nations through conviction, sacrifice, and an unbreakable sense of brotherhood.
