PTI candidate competing against Maryam Nawaz sent to jail on judicial remand

LAHORE: The anti-terrorism court Monday sent Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) candidate Mian Shahzad Farooq to jail on a 14-day judicial remand for allegedly firing at the police during a rally in Lahore.

Farooq, who lost the election to Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Maryam Nawaz Sharif from NA-119 constituency, was arrested along with 10 others on Saturday.

The police had requested a 30-day physical remand of the accused, but the court rejected it. The lawyer of the accused claimed that they were arrested in a political case.

The court also discharged nine co-accused of Farooq from the case, namely Rohail Ashraf, Shah Zaman, Mohsen Abbas, Ahmed Butt, Nadeem Sherwani, Mudassar Abu Sufyan and two others. The case was registered against them under section 514/24 of the Pakistan Penal Code at Gujarpura police station.

They were accused of taking out a rally and firing at the police in violation of the election code of conduct.
