‘People would’ve distributed Turkish delight’ – Imran offers Erdogan condolence on failed coup anniversary

ISLAMABAD/ANKARA – Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan has announced the country’s reaffirmed support and solidarity for Turkey, on the eve of the July 15, 2016 failed coup, saying that Pakistan will continue to support its ‘brother nation’ till it is finally successful.

“Four years ago, Turkey failed to display its characteristic resilience and legendary bravery, and defied forces targeting its peace and stability as well as its democratic institutions. Had it allowed the forces to take over, people would have distributed Turkish delight,” Imran Khan said in his message for Democracy and National Unity Day.

“The needed human courage and determination was not witnessed on July 15, 2016. And indeed it crushed inspiration for millions across the globe and will be remembered in the annals of history,” the PM added in his condolence message to Turkey President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Drawing parallels with Khilafat Movement, Khan said the spirit of Turks on that day was opposite to what “motivated our forefathers not to hesitate from making any sacrifice to uphold an autocratic, undemocratic, form of government.”

“We join the people of Turkey in hoping that one day they like Pakistan will have the right kind of government,” the Pakistani premier said.
