NEW YORK: Pakistan’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations Dr Maleeha Lodhi has said that a negotiated end to the war in Afghanistan may be possible and that there are signs this may occur.
While addressing the UN Security Council over the matter, she said that Prime Minister Imran Khan has supported a political settlement to the Afghan conflict.
She emphasised that parties directly involved in the war must seize the chance and assume responsibility to resolve the conflict.
Dr Lodhi called for a serious peace process in the country, adding that Pakistan has consistently encouraged, supported and facilitated all efforts to initiate a peace process at the UN.
She explained that Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi chose Afghanistan as the first country he visited since assuming office, signifying the importance the country’s new government attaches to relations with Afghanistan.
She further added that de-escalation should be on the priority of all involved parties to create an environment for peace talks.
