Dubbed as celebrity royalty, the couple’s announcement drove the world mad. Social media including Facebook, Twitter and Instagram went haywire when the news surfaced and pictures and videos from the event went viral.
Similarly, news publications also expressed their excitement over the union.
“Officially India’s First Couple,” screamed the front page of Mumbai tabloid Mid-Day on Tuesday, while the Mumbai Mirror’s headline read, “Clean bowled!” Another publication wished them the best in their “new innings”.
The couple tied the knot in an intimate wedding in Italy which was only attended by close relatives and friends. The venue of the wedding is believed to have taken place at the Borgo Finocchieto, a heritage property within a resort in Tuscany.
The wedding ceremony was a traditional Indian one with phairas, sangeet and the haldi rasm.
Both Anushka and Virat wore stunning ensembles by Indian designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee.
For the main event, Anushka wore an ethereal pastel pink outfit, which according to a statement by the designer was made keeping in mind the “whimsical Tuscan surroundings.” The statement further elaborated that the outfit was “blush pink with tropical flora and fauna, hand-embroidered in silk floss. Exotic birds and butterflies were rendered with the finest quality needlecraft. It took 67 karigars, 32 days to complete the ensemble. To complement her lehnga, beautiful jadau jewellery was handcrafted in uncut diamonds, pearls and pale pink spinel.”
On the other hand, Virat wore a classic hand embroidered ivory sherwani.
For her engagement, Anushka wore a Sabyasachi velvet saree in deep burgundy. The sari was hand-embroidered using miniature pearls and the finest quality zardosi and marori. For her mehndi, she wore a graphic lehenga in hues of fuchsia pink and Indian orange. The lehnga was hand-printed by the famed Calcutta block printers and hand-embroidered with gota and marori.
Bollywood stars and esteemed members of the cricket fraternity took to social media to wish the newlyweds and congratulate them on their nuptials.
Anushka’s favourite co-star Shahrukh Khan wrote, “Ab yeh hui na real Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi. My love to both Anushka Sharma & Virat Kohli. May God bless you with happiness & health.”

A statement for the journalists revealed that the couple will host a reception in New Delhi for relatives on December 21, followed by a celebration in Mumbai on December 26 to be attended by Bollywood stars and cricketers.
