ISLAMABAD: Senate Standing Committee on Finance, Revenue, Economic Affairs, Statistics and Privatisation asked Attorney General of Pakistan (AGP) to provide documents of Sharif family, which Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) shared with the Joint Investigation Team (JIT) constituted by Supreme Court (SC) in Panama Papers case, to the committee.
Through a letter sent to AGP on November 13, a copy of which is available with Pakistan Today, Committee Chairman Saleem Mandviwalla said that chairman of the committee, under the rules, has the power to summon or ask for production of required documents.
The chairman also asked the AGP to play his role in providing the tax documents of Sharif family, and in case of failure, the committee will refer the matter to the SC for clarification.
It may be mentioned here that the committee has repeatedly been asking Ministry of Finance and FBR to provide the documents from the last few months. However, citing legal reasons, the documents have not been provided to the committee.
The law ministry has claimed that FBR could not share information with the parliamentary committee under the Income Tax Ordinance, 2001 (ITO).
