Salman Akram Raja says February 8 will not be forgotten, vows continued protest

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Secretary General Salman Akram Raja on Tuesday described the events of February 8 as a denial of the public mandate and said the party would continue its political mobilisation.

Speaking at a press conference in Islamabad, Mr Raja said protest and strike calls were part of a broader political strategy and did not necessarily involve confrontation.

“This is about resistance and awareness,” he said, adding that the issue could not be forgotten.

He also referred to the health of PTI founder Imran Khan and said the Supreme Court had permitted Barrister Salman Safdar to meet him in Adiala Jail. According to Mr Raja, Mr Safdar was scheduled to meet the former prime minister at 2pm as part of the day allocated for family members and legal representatives.

Mr Raja thanked supporters who responded to the party’s strike call on February 8 and said the youth remained central to the party’s mobilisation efforts.

He said the party’s political struggle would continue through public engagement and awareness campaigns.

Earlier on Saturday, despite tightened security measures and restrictions imposed by the administration to deter mobilisation, the PTI and its allied platform Tehreek-e-Tahafuz Ayeen-e-Pakistan had reiterated their plan to observe February 8 as a ‘Black Day’ and ‘Day of Mourning’ through protests and a strike call.

Authorities had imposed Section 144 and launched a crackdown on PTI workers and leaders ahead of the protest call, prompting several party members to go into hiding to avoid arrests.
