Peshawar’s Lady Reading Hospital appoints first woman medical director
Lady Reading Hospital in Peshawar has appointed Dr Saadia Ilyas as medical director, making her the first woman to hold the position. She currently heads paediatric cardiology and was approved by the hospital’s Board of Governors.
PESHAWAR: Lady Reading Hospital has appointed Dr Saadia Ilyas as its medical director, making her the first woman to hold the post at the city’s oldest medical teaching institution.
Her appointment was approved by the hospital’s Board of Governors at a meeting chaired by Prof Nausherwan Burki after a selection committee recommended her for the position.
Dr Ilyas currently heads the paediatric cardiology department. A graduate of Khyber Medical College, she completed postgraduate training in the United Kingdom and holds MRCPCH and FRCPCH qualifications. She is also a fellow of the Paediatric and Congenital Interventional Cardiovascular Society.
Hospital spokesperson Mohammad Asim said Dr Ilyas was an internationally acclaimed clinician and educator who was regularly invited to speak at international scientific conferences on the latest research. He added that she also serves as an examiner for MRCPCH in the UK.
The hospital said her appointment was intended to help strengthen services across specialties. Mohammad Asim said the Board of Governors was confident that under her leadership, the hospital would further improve patient care, clinical governance, medical education and research.
Paediatric cardiology at the hospital has seen improvement through collaborations with leading international institutions, benefiting local patients, according to the hospital.
The board, faculty, staff and administration also extended congratulations to Dr Ilyas, who is an associate professor, and wished her success in the role.
