Iraq seeks broader trade partnership with Pakistan
Iraq has called for broader economic engagement with Pakistan, urging stronger trade, investment and technology links. Iraqi Consul General Dr Maher Mjhid Jejan also asked Karachi businesses to send delegations to Iraq.
KARACHI: Iraq has proposed turning its long-standing ties with Pakistan into a wider economic partnership centred on trade, investment, technology and artificial intelligence cooperation.
Speaking at the Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Iraqi Consul General in Karachi Dr Maher Mjhid Jejan said economic links between the two countries remained well below their potential despite recent momentum. He called on the chamber to send trade delegations to Iraq so Pakistani businesses could see the country's economic and infrastructure changes for themselves.
Dr Jejan said bilateral trade had started to pick up after the reopening of the Iraqi Consulate General in Karachi. He added that exports from Karachi to Iraq, including rice, seafood, fruits, food products and pharmaceuticals, were rising following the restoration of Iraq's diplomatic presence in the city.
The consul general urged a substantial expansion in commercial engagement between the two countries, saying the next phase of relations should include stronger investment flows and collaboration in new technologies alongside trade.
