Bilawal calls for truth commission to address AJK unrest
Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari has urged the formation of a truth and reconciliation commission in AJK, saying both the government and protesters must accept it. He made the demand amid continuing tensions and protests in the region.
MUZAFFARABAD: PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari on Tuesday called for a truth and reconciliation commission in Azad Jammu and Kashmir, saying both the government and the protesters would have to accept such a mechanism to defuse the region’s tensions.
Addressing an event in Muzaffarabad, Bilawal said, "It is necessary that during these historic elections, we restore peace and maintain fairness and transparency." He added that, "To honour the future of Kashmir and Pakistan’s stance on Kashmir, this is not about anyone’s victory or defeat. The state and the protestors will have to accept this recommendation from the PPP."
The demand comes amid weeks of friction between the regional administration and the JAAC, with protests spreading across AJK. One of the central flashpoints has been the committee’s call for the abolition of 12 seats in the region’s Legislative Assembly.
The PPP has repeatedly pressed for the formation of a truth and reconciliation commission as a political response to the unrest in AJK.
