AJK CEC calls for peaceful turnout as Mirpur phase of polls begins

MUZAFFARABAD: Azad Jammu and Kashmir Chief Election Commissioner Justice (Retd) Ghulam Mustafa Mughal has urged voters in Mirpur Division to cast their ballots peacefully as the first phase of the AJK Legislative Assembly elections gets under way on Monday.

Speaking to senior journalists ahead of polling, Mughal said the election machinery had been fully activated for voting in Mirpur, Kotli and Bhimber, where the opening stage of the three-phase electoral exercise is being held. He said arrangements had been completed to ensure polling remained free, fair, transparent and impartial.

Mughal appealed to eligible voters to take part without fear, saying, "Every vote is a national trust. I urge all eligible voters to come out without fear or hesitation and cast their ballots. Public participation is the true strength of democracy, and every citizen should fulfil this constitutional responsibility peacefully."

He said polling stations across Mirpur Division had been supplied with the required election material and polling staff had completed their training. Close coordination had also been established between the election commission, district administrations and security agencies for the smooth conduct of the vote, he added.

The chief election commissioner said security personnel from the AJK Police, Rangers, the Federal Constabulary and other law enforcement agencies had been deployed at polling stations to protect voters, staff and election material. He said the security plan had been prepared after consultations with the civil administration and law enforcement bodies to maintain a peaceful atmosphere throughout polling day.

Warning against interference in the process, Mughal said, "We are determined to hold elections that are free, fair and transparent. Any attempt to influence the polling process, violate election laws, intimidate voters or disrupt peace will be dealt with firmly and strictly in accordance with the law."

He also voiced concern over misinformation circulating on social media before polling, saying some elements were trying to create confusion by spreading false and unverified content.

Mughal said that, weather permitting, he would personally visit Mirpur, Kotli and Bhimber on Monday to inspect polling stations, review security arrangements and observe the conduct of the elections. He said, "I want to witness the polling process personally and ensure that voters are able to exercise their democratic right in a peaceful, orderly and transparent environment."
