Tarar urges men’s role in advancing equality at OIC women’s conference

ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Law and Human Rights Azam Nazeer Tarar on Monday said durable progress on women’s empowerment required the involvement of men and boys, as he addressed the concluding day of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation’s 9th Ministerial Conference on Women in Islamabad.

Speaking as chair of the meeting, Tarar said Pakistan was continuing to reinforce its legal, policy and institutional arrangements to expand women’s rights, opportunities and leadership. The two-day conference is being hosted by Pakistan and brought together representatives from OIC member states in the federal capital.

Addressing delegates, the minister said progress on equality could not rest on women alone.

Lasting progress cannot be achieved by women alone; real and sustainable change requires the active engagement of men and boys as partners in promoting equality, respect and shared responsibility.

He also said the creation of inclusive societies was a shared task that required commitment across institutions. Delegates from 57 OIC member states had gathered on Sunday for technical-level meetings ahead of the ministerial session’s second and final day.
