Peacock sets July 17 streaming debut for horror hit Obsession

ISLAMABAD: The horror film Obsession is due to arrive on Peacock on July 17, giving viewers a chance to watch at home after its strong performance in cinemas.

Directed by Curry Barker in his first feature, the film centres on Bear, played by Michael Johnston, a reserved young man who secretly has feelings for his co-worker Nikki, played by Inde Navarrette. After he makes a wish for Nikki to fall deeply in love with him, the situation spirals into a nightmare as her affection turns into a violent and lethal fixation.

The film’s move to streaming follows a theatrical run that surpassed expectations. Made for under $1 million, Obsession has taken in about $370 million worldwide, making it the highest-grossing title in Focus Features history. The studio had acquired the film for $14 million after its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival.

The film’s commercial momentum was driven in large part by strong word-of-mouth and favourable reviews. It received an A- CinemaScore from audiences and holds a 94% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Instead of the usual drop after opening weekend, the film continued to expand its box-office performance, posting notably strong gains in both its second and third weekends.

Obsession has also been identified as an early contender in the awards race. Industry observers have compared its cultural reach to Jordan Peele’s Get Out, with some suggesting it could emerge as a significant presence during awards season.

Following the film’s success, Barker is preparing his next feature, Anything but Ghosts, which is set to star Aaron Paul and Bryce Dallas Howard. He is also attached to direct A24’s planned reboot of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
