Sindh to launch province-wide action against wheat hoarders

KARACHI: The Sindh government has decided to begin a province-wide operation against wheat hoarders in an effort to check flour prices, with police and other law enforcement agencies set to support the campaign.

Addressing a press conference on Tuesday, Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon said the decision was taken at a lengthy cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah. He said the cabinet ordered action across the board after reports that substantial wheat stocks were being held back to create an artificial shortage despite what he described as a bumper crop in Sindh and Punjab.

Speaking about the planned operation, Memon said the government would move against storage sites used for hoarding. "The government will seal warehouses of hoarders and initiate a crackdown to ensure price stability," he said.

Memon also said the cabinet had approved the introduction of an integrated wheat management system in the food department. He said the Sindh Information Technology Company had been asked to review the project within one month. In addition, a committee made up of the secretaries of food, agriculture and law has been formed to examine the National Wheat Policy 2026-2030 and present its recommendations to the cabinet.
