LAHORE: A new chapter in special education and rehabilitation began in Narowal on Sunday with the inauguration of the Maryam Nawaz School for Special Children, Centre of Excellence, established under the vision of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif to promote inclusive education and empower children with special needs across the province.
Acting on the chief minister’s directions, Special Assistant to the Chief Minister for Special Education Sania Ashiq inaugurated the institution. Himmat Cards and modern assistive devices were also distributed among special children during the ceremony.
Addressing the gathering, Sania Ashiq said Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif was taking practical measures to ensure the education, rehabilitation and empowerment of special children. She added that every new project launched for special children in different cities reflected the chief minister’s unwavering commitment to their welfare and development.

Sania Ashiq said the chief minister often asked, “Sania, are you taking care of my children?” She added that special children were as dear to Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif as her own children.
She said the Himmat Card, Meal Programme, Khud Mukhtar Programme, health screening initiative and the provision of assistive devices were revolutionary measures introduced for the welfare and empowerment of special children.
Sania Ashiq said only a compassionate mother could introduce such welfare programmes for special children, adding that Punjab was fortunate to have a caring chief minister like Maryam Nawaz Sharif.
She further said the Punjab Special Education Department was actively working for the education and rehabilitation of special children in line with the chief minister’s vision.
Secretary Special Education Syed Shoaib Iqbal and Director General Special Education Lt (Retd) Shoaib Jadoon also attended the inauguration ceremony.
