Modi faces criticism after report questions overseas honours

NEW DELHI: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has drawn criticism after several awards and distinctions conferred on him during foreign visits were established shortly before his arrival in the host countries.

The issue gained attention after Modi was presented with what was described as one of Seychelles’s highest honours during his recent trip to the Indian Ocean nation. Seychelles President Patrick Herminie awarded him the Guardian of the Blue Horizon distinction along with a trophy and certificate.

Social media users later pointed to mistakes on the certificate, including misspellings of Republic and Seychelles. The award had been created three days before Modi’s visit, making him its first and only recipient. Multiple detection tools flagged the certificate as AI-generated.

Political reaction in India

The developments prompted a sharp response from India’s opposition Congress party, which accused Modi of promoting personality-centric politics. Congress leader Supriya Shrinate criticised the episode in a post on X.
