Quetta steps up security after threat alert

QUETTA: Security has been intensified across Quetta after authorities received what officials described as a credible threat alert, prompting a wider deployment of Frontier Corps personnel, police and other law enforcement agencies in the provincial capital.

Officials said security teams have been stationed at key entry and exit points, major roads, markets, commercial centres, public squares and government buildings. They are also carrying out snap checks, vehicle searches and identity verification of commuters as part of precautionary measures aimed at averting any untoward incident.

The Quetta-Karachi National Highway, which had remained closed for nearly 24 hours over security concerns, has now been reopened to all traffic. Passenger coaches and freight transport have resumed using the route, although screening at several checkpoints is continuing.

According to security officials, monitoring has also been strengthened around sensitive sites, public institutions, educational facilities and other important locations, while extra personnel have been kept ready for rapid response if needed. Residents have been advised to limit unnecessary movement during the heightened alert and keep identification documents and vehicle papers with them to avoid delays during checking.
