NDMA issues GLOF and flash flood alert amid active monsoon spell

ISLAMABAD: The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has warned of an increased risk of glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs), flash floods and landslides as an active monsoon system continues to affect several parts of the country.

The authority said heavy rainfall combined with accelerated glacier melting has heightened the risk in vulnerable areas of Gilgit-Baltistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Azad Jammu and Kashmir.

According to the NDMA, intense downpours could trigger flash floods in mountainous regions, while low-lying urban areas may experience flooding due to heavy rain.

The authority has directed provincial and district administrations, along with relevant departments, to remain on high alert, monitor vulnerable locations and ensure emergency response measures are in place.

Residents living near rivers, streams and glacial lakes have been advised to stay vigilant, avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rainfall and follow official weather advisories.

The NDMA also urged tourists and local communities in northern and hilly areas to exercise caution as weather conditions could deteriorate rapidly during the ongoing monsoon spell.
