Qatar hosts technical talks after US-Iran deal

DOHA: Technical-level talks linked to the recent US-Iran agreement are taking place in Qatar, though officials have denied reports of direct high-level negotiations between Washington and Tehran.

US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner are in Doha for meetings with Qatari officials and mediators on the implementation of the understanding reached earlier this month.

Iran has also confirmed that an expert delegation is expected to travel to Doha, saying the discussions will focus on implementing parts of the agreement rather than negotiating a final settlement.

Key issues include the reopening and management of the Strait of Hormuz, the release of Iranian assets frozen under US sanctions and the future framework for talks on Iran’s nuclear programme.

Iranian officials are also expected to discuss restricted funds with Qatari authorities, while Washington has linked any asset transfers to compliance with the agreement.

The discussions come as Qatar continues mediation efforts aimed at preserving the ceasefire and creating space for broader negotiations on regional security.
