Djokovic overcomes Wu to reach Wimbledon second round
Novak Djokovic beat Wu Yibing in four sets to begin his Wimbledon campaign. The Serb now moves on to a second-round meeting with Stefanos Tsitsipas.
LONDON: Novak Djokovic opened his latest attempt to win a record 25th Grand Slam title with a four-set victory over China’s Wu Yibing in the first round at Wimbledon on Monday.
The 39-year-old Serb was tested throughout by world number 102 Wu, who has spent much of the last two seasons sidelined by injuries, before coming through 6-4, 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 in three hours and 12 minutes on Centre Court.
After the match, Djokovic said Wimbledon remained deeply important to him and acknowledged the difficulty of the contest.
