Punjab issues heatwave measures for zoo animals

LAHORE: The Punjab Wildlife and Parks Department has directed zoos and wildlife parks across the province to put in place heat protection measures for animals and birds amid the ongoing heatwave.

Under the guidelines, all facilities managed by the department have been told to keep clean drinking water available at all times in cages, enclosures and animal compartments. Food and water are also to be placed in shaded spots, while officials have been instructed to ensure enough shade according to the number of animals at each site and to sprinkle water inside enclosures where required.

The department has ordered additional arrangements for species considered more vulnerable to high temperatures, including monkeys, bears, lions and tigers. Their enclosures are to be fitted with fans, air coolers and ice, and ponds or water pools are to be maintained to help them cool down.

Veterinary staff have been told to watch animals closely for signs of heat stress, trim fur where necessary, and provide Vitamin C, glucose and other supplements on the advice of specialists. The department said any animal showing symptoms of heat-related illness must be given immediate medical treatment.
