Couple dies in Shangla fire as Punjab braces for heatwave

LAHORE: The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Punjab has issued a high alert across the province as temperatures are expected to soar 4 to 7 degrees Celsius above average from May 15 to 19. Commissioners and deputy commissioners have been directed to remain vigilant, with all relevant departments on alert to handle heatwave-related emergencies.

Citizens are advised to stay hydrated, avoid direct sunlight, and take precautions against heatstroke. Westerly winds may bring rainfall to parts of Punjab between May 19 and 20, possibly easing the heat.

Meanwhile, in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Shangla district, a couple died in a wildfire late Tuesday night in the Hasham Khel Dab mountains. The victims, Hakim Zada and his wife Hajiroon, were caught in flames while trying to save firewood near their home. The fire, reportedly started by the couple themselves, spread rapidly due to strong winds before being extinguished. Compensation will be provided to their family.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa PDMA has also issued a heatwave advisory, forecasting temperatures 5 to 7 degrees Celsius above normal until May 19, with possible rainfall and hailstorms later in the week.
