ICC confirms qualification pathway for cricket at LA Olympics 2028

ISLAMABAD: The International Cricket Council on Monday set out the qualification system for cricket’s return to the Olympic Games at Los Angeles 2028, marking the sport’s first appearance at the Olympics in 128 years.

The ICC said the men’s and women’s tournaments will each feature six teams, with Africa, Asia, Europe and Oceania all assured of representation. According to the governing body, five places in each event will be decided through a mix of existing ICC competitions and ICC T20I rankings under the current Future Tour Programme structure, while the last berth in both tournaments will be settled through a new eight-team ICC Olympics Qualifier in 2027.

In a statement, the ICC said "Five qualification places in each event will be decided through a combination of existing ICC events and ICC T20I rankings, according to the existing approved and published FTP structure".

"The sixth and final places in both the Men's and Women's competitions will be determined through the new ICC Olympics Qualifier, which will take place in 2027", the statement added.

Women’s teams already confirmed

The ICC said the ongoing Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 has already secured places for Australia, England, India and South Africa in the women’s Olympic competition. It said those teams qualified as the highest-placed eligible finishers from Oceania, Europe, Asia and Africa respectively.

Host nation criteria and ranking cut-offs

Under the pathway announced by the ICC, the United States remains eligible to qualify automatically as host in both the men’s and women’s events, but only if it appears in the top 15 of the relevant ICC T20I rankings at any point during the qualification window from June 30, 2026, to December 31, 2026.

If the US men’s or women’s team does not meet that requirement, the fifth qualification place in the respective event will go instead to the highest-placed non-qualified side in the rankings. The ICC said the cut-off date for the men’s rankings is March 1, 2027, while for the women’s event it is December 31, 2026.

West Indies ineligible for Olympic participation

The ICC also said the West Indies cannot compete in the Olympic Games or secure a quota place because the team is a combined ICC member made up of several Caribbean nations and is not recognised as a National Olympic Committee by the International Olympic Committee.

However, the governing body added that if the West Indies men’s or women’s side is among the eight highest-ranked teams not yet qualified by December 31, 2026, a separate Caribbean Qualifier will be staged to decide which National Olympic Committee from the region will advance to the ICC Olympics Qualifier.
