Woman arrested after three daughters swept away in Jhelum River

JHANG: A woman was taken into custody after her three young daughters were swept away in the Jhelum River in an apparent suicide attempt near a village on the outskirts of Jhang, police said.

According to police, Tahira Yasmeen, a resident of Mouza Chhata, entered the river with her daughters following a domestic dispute. People present nearby managed to pull the woman out of the water, but the children were carried away by the strong current.

The missing girls were identified as Sanam, 10, Sadaf, 7, and Maryam, 3. Police said Tahira Yasmeen had been married to Amir Khan for the past 12 years. Initial information indicated that repeated disagreements between the couple were linked to family and financial problems.

Police said the complaint filed in the case stated that the latest argument took place after the woman asked her husband for travel expenses to visit her parents. Rescue 1122 began a search operation after the incident, but the bodies of the children had not been recovered by nightfall. The search was suspended due to darkness and was due to resume the next morning.
