Krishna, Jaiswal lead India to 3-0 ODI series sweep over Afghanistan

CHENNAI: Prasidh Krishna's first five-wicket haul in One-day Internationals and an unbeaten century from Yashasvi Jaiswal carried India to a nine-wicket win over Afghanistan in the third ODI on Saturday, sealing a 3-0 series clean sweep.

Krishna returned figures of 5-23 as India bowled Afghanistan out for 218 in 44.2 overs, despite a fighting 102 from captain Hashmatullah Shahidi. In reply, Jaiswal made an unbeaten 110 and shared a 170-run opening stand with Rohit Sharma as India chased down the target in 28.4 overs.

The three-match contest was the first bilateral ODI series between the two sides and begins the build-up to the 2027 ODI World Cup, which will be held in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia. The result also completed India's sweep across formats against Afghanistan after winning the one-off Test earlier in the tour.

Krishna triggers early collapse

Afghanistan chose to bat first, but Krishna quickly put them under pressure by claiming the first four wickets as the visitors slipped to 36-4. He removed Rahmanullah Gurbaz for 5, Rahmat Shah for 5 and Ibrahim Zadran for 11, with Rohit taking all three catches. Darwish Rasooli then fell for 1 as India tightened their grip on the innings.

Afghanistan rebuilt through Shahidi and Azmatullah Omarzai, who added 105 for the fifth wicket. Omarzai made 50 before Prince Yadav broke the stand, ending what was his ninth half-century in ODIs. Mohammad Nabi contributed 21 in another partnership with Shahidi, but Afghanistan lost wickets in clusters again after that.

Shahidi battled through cramps in the hot and humid conditions in Chennai and moved carefully late in his innings, but still completed his maiden ODI hundred with a boundary off Washington Sundar. He was dismissed soon afterwards by Krishna, who claimed his fifth wicket to finish the innings.

Jaiswal's century seals easy chase

India's chase was driven by aggressive batting at the top. Jaiswal and Rohit struck boundaries regularly and dominated the Afghanistan attack from the outset, putting the home side firmly in control.

Rohit made 79 from 69 balls before he miscued a pull shot and was caught at deep mid-wicket off Mohammad Nabi. By then, however, India were already within reach of victory.

Jaiswal brought up his second ODI century with a six and then hit another maximum to complete the chase. He remained unbeaten on 110, while Shreyas Iyer was 20 not out after adding 54 runs with him for the second wicket as India wrapped up the win with plenty to spare.
