Thousands participate in Rawalpindi Tigers open trials at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium

RAWALPINDI: Thousands of aspiring cricketers participated in the Rawalpindi Tigers Open Trials held at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium on Friday, as the city witnessed one of the largest talent identification exercises in recent years.

The trials were inaugurated by Federal Minister for Railways Hanif Abbasi, who facilitated the initiative in collaboration with Lahore Qalandars as part of efforts to provide sporting opportunities and positive engagement for the youth of Rawalpindi.

Players from Rawalpindi and adjoining areas arrived at the venue throughout the day to undergo a structured assessment process conducted by Lahore Qalandars’ talent hunt and coaching staff.

Following the initial screening process, which attracted more than 10,000 aspiring cricketers, a rigorous evaluation led to the selection of approximately 140 players from the thousands who turned up for the trials. These players progressed to the second phase, where they underwent further assessments under the supervision of the coaching panel. The pool was subsequently narrowed down to 35 standout performers before the final group of 20 players was selected. The chosen cricketers earned their places purely on merit, having consistently impressed throughout every stage of the assessment process.

The selected players will now enter the next phase of development under the Lahore Qalandars player development programme. The entire squad will receive structured coaching and training at the Smart Qalandars High Performance Centre located in Capital Smart City, Islamabad, where they will undergo professional skill development and performance monitoring.

As part of the exposure opportunities available through the programme, one player from the selected group will also be chosen to travel with the Lahore Qalandars squad to the Global Super League in Guyana. The player will gain first-hand experience of a professional franchise environment, training alongside international and domestic stars and observing elite-level cricket operations.

The open trials form part of the broader player development and talent identification framework being implemented for Rawalpindi Tigers, with the objective of discovering and nurturing emerging cricket talent from the region.

Officials overseeing the process described the trials as transparent and merit-based, with all participants receiving equal opportunities to showcase their abilities before the selectors.

The successful completion of the trials marks the first major step in the formation of the Rawalpindi Tigers squad while providing a structured pathway for talented cricketers from Rawalpindi to pursue opportunities at higher levels of the game.
