Pakistan's name resonating globally after US-Iran deal, PM Shehbaz tells parliament

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif told the National Assembly on Friday that Pakistan had earned global admiration for its role in brokering the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding — the agreement that ended the US-Iran war which erupted in late February.

"Several countries have sought such respect for centuries but could not attain what God has blessed Pakistan with today. From Japan to Saudi Arabia, from Kuala Lumpur to Casablanca, from Mexico to India — if any country's name is echoing with honour right now, it is Pakistan," he said.

The premier called on lawmakers from both sides of the aisle to collectively adopt a resolution affirming Pakistan's peace efforts, arguing it would signal to the world that political differences did not erode national unity.

Without holding back on recognition, PM Shehbaz singled out Field Marshal Asim Munir as the most pivotal figure in the mediation. "It is an undeniable truth that the most significant role in this belongs to Field Marshal Asim Munir, who worked tirelessly, sacrificing sleep over the past two to three months, to restore peace," he said.

He also acknowledged Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, Opposition Leader Mehmood Khan Achakzai, PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, and other coalition allies for their respective contributions.

The prime minister disclosed that he had spoken with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian by telephone on Thursday evening, during which the Iranian leader repeatedly expressed gratitude toward Pakistan for standing by Tehran through the conflict.

PM Shehbaz said he extended a formal invitation to President Pezeshkian to visit Pakistan, describing the two nations as "not just neighbours, but brother countries." He added that Pezeshkian accepted the invitation and indicated he would travel to Islamabad soon.

The Iranian president also requested PM Shehbaz's attendance at the funeral of assassinated supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, scheduled for July 3-4. The prime minister confirmed a Pakistani delegation would be present.

He also noted that global oil prices were already declining in the aftermath of the US-Iran agreement, predicting further reductions ahead.
