LAHORE: Lahore authorities have launched a plan to improve traffic flow at Defence Mor, a major intersection that routinely faces heavy congestion, with officials focusing on engineering changes and traffic management measures.
The initiative is being overseen by Lahore Chief Traffic Officer Syed Abdul Raheem Shirazi, who conducted multiple visits to the site and held meetings with the departments concerned to work out a longer-term remedy for bottlenecks at the junction.
During consultations with officials from the Traffic Engineering and Planning Agency and the Walton Cantonment Board, the CTO presented proposals to reconfigure the intersection to allow smoother vehicle movement. Under the plan, the turning lane at Defence Mor would be widened from 22 feet to 33 feet.
Officials said the redesign is expected to raise the junction's handling capacity from about 6,000 vehicles per hour to nearly 9,000 vehicles per hour. They also estimate that average speeds at the intersection could improve from 15-20 kilometres per hour to 40-45 kilometres per hour after implementation, while peak-hour queues of 400 to 600 metres are also expected to shrink significantly.
