Ali Safina accused of fueling Asim Azhar breakup — here’s what he says happened

Pakistani actor and host Ali Safina has denied allegations that a question he asked during a podcast played any role in the breakup of singer Asim Azhar and actor Meerub Ali, saying the moment was being misrepresented and taken out of context.

Safina addressed the speculation during an appearance on a morning show, where he was directly asked whether his comments on a podcast had triggered tensions between the former couple.

Responding to the claims, he dismissed the suggestion, stressing that the interaction had been light-hearted and conversational rather than serious or provocative. “We are all very good friends. I also had worked with her, so I just asked a question. Also, when we work together, we develop a good camaraderie. I just asked a question, she replied to it in fun,” he said.

The controversy stems from a podcast episode in which Safina jokingly asked Meerub whether Asim Azhar ever sang his popular track “O Haniya O Dil Janiya” for her — a reference that online users linked to the singer’s past, including his widely discussed relationship with actor Hania Aamir.

The comment quickly circulated on social media, with some users speculating that the exchange had contributed to tension in the couple’s relationship.

Safina, however, rejected that narrative and said the clip was being amplified beyond its original context. He also pointed to a separate social media video by a user named Abdullah, suggesting it played a larger role in fuelling the online discussion.

The breakup between Asim Azhar and Meerub Ali was announced in June 2025, when Azhar confirmed on Instagram that the couple had mutually decided to part ways after nearly three years of engagement.

Meerub Ali also addressed the separation in a brief Instagram Story, writing: “God knows. and that’s enough.”

Since the announcement, online speculation has continued around both individuals, with media reports frequently linking Asim Azhar to his former co-star Hania Aamir. However, neither has publicly confirmed any relationship.

As the conversation continues online, Safina’s remarks add another layer to the ongoing discussion — though he maintains that his role in the matter has been overstated.
