ISLAMABAD: Fresh online speculation around Spider-Man: Brand New Day has intensified after promotional merchandise appeared to hint at Sadie Sink’s character in the upcoming film, while separate reports also pointed to another trailer leak ahead of the movie’s release.
Sony has already struggled to keep details of the film under wraps, including cast additions and an earlier trailer leak. A second trailer has now also surfaced, described as being of very high quality despite carrying a red X and a property of Sony mark.
Merchandise image sparks Jean Grey theory
The main focus of the latest discussion has been Sink’s still-unconfirmed role. The Stranger Things actor has only appeared briefly in promotional material, while Marvel and Sony have not officially identified the character she is playing.
That secrecy has led to sustained fan debate since her casting was announced. The latest round of theories followed a leaked image of a bag clip-style figure that many online have taken as a sign Sink may be portraying Jean Grey, a character associated with the X-Men.
The figure is said to resemble Sink’s appearance in trailer footage, including red hair, and also shows pink energy effects around the hands and eyes. Those visual details have been widely linked by fans to Jean Grey’s mutant powers. The alleged merchandise leak, however, has not been independently verified by Marvel or Sony, and no official product release has confirmed the identity of the character.
Why the theory has gained momentum
Rumours connecting Sink to Jean Grey first emerged soon after her casting, although they initially drew scepticism because of the character’s close connection to the X-Men rather than Spider-Man’s usual story world. The expanding Marvel Cinematic Universe and its increasing focus on mutant-related storylines have since made that possibility appear more plausible to many observers.
The film is set to bring Tom Holland back as Peter Parker after nearly five years. The story, continues in a fractured reality in which the world no longer remembers Peter Parker’s civilian identity, even though Spider-Man remains broadly recognised. Zendaya is returning as MJ, Jacob Batalon as Ned Leeds, Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner and Jon Bernthal as Frank Castle.
Claims have circulated that Sink’s character may have powers involving control or possession of others, which some fans have linked to certain interpretations of Jean Grey, particularly in connection with the Phoenix Force storyline. Some suggest Spider-Man could be resistant to those abilities in the film. Fans have also scrutinised the use of yellow tones in promotional material featuring Sink’s character, seeing it as another possible reference to Jean Grey’s comic-book design.
Despite the growing speculation, Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures have not commented publicly on the character’s identity. Merchandise leaks in major franchises have previously proved incomplete or misleading, and any confirmation may not come until later marketing stages or the film’s release.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day is due in theatres on July 31.
