UFC’s rise reaches the White House lawn

WASHINGTON: The Ultimate Fighting Championship’s journey from a fringe spectacle to a fixture of mainstream American culture is set to reach an unusual stage on Sunday, when bouts are held on the White House South Lawn.

According to AFP, workers were putting the finishing touches on a large arena for the event, which is officially being held to mark the 250th anniversary of the United States and also falls on President Donald Trump’s 80th birthday. Fighters appearing before Trump are expected to combine striking and grappling techniques, including punches, kicks, chokes and joint locks, in a sport known for its physical intensity.

At Fifty/50 Martial Arts Academy, UFC fighter Ryan Hall said the sport’s ascent had been remarkable. Hall, who owns the gym and serves as its head trainer, told AFP that the prospect of a UFC event at the White House would once have seemed implausible.
