Ben-Gvir posts dramatic video calling for mosques to be silenced at prayer time
Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir has called for legislation restricting azaan broadcasts from mosques, using a TikTok-style video that has reignited debate over religious freedom

Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir has sparked debate after calling for legislation to restrict the Muslim call to prayer, known as the azaan, which is broadcast from mosques across Israel.
Ben-Gvir recently shared a social media video in which he argued that loudspeaker broadcasts of the azaan disturb residents' sleep and should be regulated. The video quickly gained attention online, not only because of the proposal itself but also because of its unusual presentation.
Styled like a short-form social media skit, the clip shows the minister asleep before suddenly waking up and addressing viewers. The TikTok-style format stood in contrast to the seriousness of the issue and quickly generated discussion across social media platforms.
The Azaan is a public call announcing the time for one of Islam’s five daily prayers. Recited from mosques, it serves as both a reminder for worship and a declaration of Islamic faith. For Muslims around the world, it remains a central part of daily religious life. Efforts to limit the azaan target a key Islamic religious practice.
