Health and education top priorities after economic stability, Aurangzeb says

ISLAMABAD: Finance Minister Senator Muhammad Aurangzeb has said the government is shifting its focus to health, education, skills development and social protection after making progress toward economic stability, according to the finance ministry.

The minister made the remarks during a meeting with a World Bank delegation headed by Vice President for Human Development Mamta Murthi. Aurangzeb said Pakistan’s young population is a major asset and stressed the need to equip young people with skills that match current requirements. He said investment in human capital was vital for sustainable economic growth, improved competitiveness and better employment opportunities.

He also appreciated the World Bank’s continued support for Pakistan’s development and reform agenda. According to the finance ministry, Aurangzeb said strengthening the capabilities of young people and preparing them for a changing global market remained an important part of the government’s economic transformation plan.

Focus on health, education and skills

The meeting reviewed a range of human development issues, including maternal and child health, nutrition, immunisation, early education, population-related challenges, stronger primary healthcare systems and the provision of essential medical services.

Murthi said progress in child malnutrition, stunting, access to quality education and improved healthcare services was important for long-term development. She said the World Bank would continue supporting effective service delivery and efforts aimed at achieving measurable results in Pakistan.

Both sides also discussed the use of artificial intelligence and digital technologies to support progress in health, education and workforce development. The World Bank delegation shared international experience in technical and vocational training, skills development and programmes linked to employment.

World Bank support and future cooperation

Discussions also underscored the need for stronger links between industry and training systems, along with greater private sector participation in skills initiatives. Murthi invited Pakistan to attend the Universal Health Coverage global forum scheduled to be held in Japan later this year.

At the end of the meeting, both sides reaffirmed their commitment to expanding cooperation in health, education, social protection, workforce development and technology-based service delivery.
