Nawaz Sharif arrives in GB to meet PML-N ticket holders ahead of June 7 elections

GILGIT: Former prime minister and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Nawaz Sharif arrived in Gilgit-Baltistan on Tuesday for a brief visit as the party stepped up preparations for the region’s June 7 general elections.

The polls are scheduled to be held on June 7 after being delayed for four months due to severe winter conditions. During his one-day visit to Gilgit, Nawaz is expected to meet PML-N ticket holders contesting the upcoming election.

State-run PTV reported that Nawaz was accompanied by Defence Minister Khawaja Asif, Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal, Inter-Provincial Coordination Minister Rana Sanaullah, Punjab Senior Provincial Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb, senators Pervaiz Rasheed and Anusha Rahman, and MPA Kazim Ali Pirzada.

Minister for Kashmir Affairs and Gilgit-Baltistan Amir Muqam, Nawaz’s son-in-law retired Captain Mohammad Safdar, former Gilgit-Baltistan chief minister Hafiz Hafeezur Rehman and other party workers received him on arrival. Earlier in the day, the PML-N said in a post on X that the Gilgit-Baltistan Election Commission had issued a no-objection certificate allowing Nawaz to visit the region and lead the party’s campaign for the elections.
