Los Angeles marks Marilyn Monroe’s 100th birth anniversary

LOS ANGELES: Hollywood is commemorating the 100th anniversary of Marilyn Monroe’s birth with a series of events in Los Angeles honouring the late actor and model’s life, film career and lasting cultural influence.

Monroe was born in Los Angeles on June 1, 1926. She is being remembered not only for her screen career, but also for her journey from a difficult childhood and an early marriage to becoming one of Hollywood’s biggest stars. Over time, she emerged as one of cinema’s most recognisable figures and was also noted for challenging industry stereotypes and speaking about the pressure and exploitation women faced in Hollywood well before those discussions became widespread.

Centenary events begin in Los Angeles

The centenary programme began on Monday morning at the TCL Chinese Theatre with a tribute event that included a Happy Birthday sing-along led by her former co-star Jane Russell. The event also featured 100 roses and a commemorative cake.

The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures has meanwhile launched a special exhibition, Marilyn Monroe: Hollywood Icon, featuring material from Monroe’s film career alongside personal memorabilia. The exhibition will continue at the museum until February 2027.

Films, memorabilia and auction sale

The museum is also scheduled to hold special screenings during the month of several Monroe classics, including Niagara (1953), The Seven Year Itch (1955), and The Misfits (1961).

Among the items on display at the exhibition is the pink dress Monroe wore while performing Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953). Separately, Julien’s Auctions is due to hold a 100 Years of Marilyn sale on June 4, with around 200 items linked to her life and career.

Monroe died in August 1962 at the age of 36 at her home in Brentwood. More than six decades later, she continues to be regarded as one of Hollywood’s enduring icons, with an influence that still extends across film, fashion and popular culture.
