Karachi jail seeks in-prison medical examination for Anmol over kidney complaint

KARACHI: Central Jail Karachi authorities have asked Civil Hospital Karachi to send a medical team to examine alleged drug suspect Anmol alias Pinky after she complained of kidney-related pain, according to an application submitted by the jail superintendent on May 26.

The request said the prisoner had first been examined at the jail clinic on May 23 and was then advised to undergo further assessment. The application stated that an ultrasound had found an echogenic area in one kidney at the lower pole, which was described as likely indicating a benign condition, angiomyolipoma.

According to the application, the examining doctor recommended a repeat scan after proper fasting, along with additional laboratory tests and further medical work-up. She also required an evaluation of the gallbladder for calculi and said she should be referred to the Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation (SIUT).

The jail administration, however, said moving the prisoner outside the jail could create security concerns because of her high-profile status. In the application, the superintendent said she could not be transported because of extraordinary security risks linked to her movement and requested that the required examination be arranged inside the prison or through a specially constituted medical board under secure custody arrangements.

South Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Syed Asad Raza also confirmed to Dawn that police had sought treatment for her within the prison premises.

Last week, Anmol was sent to jail on a 14-day judicial remand in several narcotics cases as well as a murder case. She was arrested earlier this month in Karachi in connection with two cases involving possession of narcotics and an unlicensed weapon.

She had already been nominated in multiple criminal cases before her latest arrest, taking the number of active cases against her to more than a dozen.
