One killed, 11 injured as earthquake damages houses in Jhelum

JEHLUM: At least one person was killed and 11 others were injured after an earthquake damaged several houses in the Jalalpur Sharif area of Jhelum district's Pind Dadan Khan tehsil on Tuesday, according to the local administration.

Jhelum Deputy Commissioner Mir Reza Ozgen said around 10 houses were badly damaged in the quake and confirmed one death in the incident. He said police, rescue teams and the local administration had reached the site and that search and damage assessment work was continuing.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department said in a press release that a 4.8-magnitude earthquake was recorded at 7:06pm. It said the quake struck at a depth of 12 kilometres and its epicentre was located 58 kilometres southwest of Jhelum at latitude 32.59 north and longitude 73.23 east.

The administration said emergency teams were present in the affected area as authorities continued to assess the extent of the damage.
