NEW YORK/ISLAMABAD: Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar arrived in New York on Tuesday on a three-day visit to participate in key United Nations meetings, China’s high-level “signature debate” at the Security Council, and hold bilateral engagements with foreign ministers and senior UN officials amid growing global concern over conflicts, multilateral challenges and strains on international law, the Foreign Office said (FO).

Dar reached New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport from Beijing, where he had accompanied Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif during his official visit to China, the FO said in a statement. He was received by Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, Consul General in New York Aamir Ahmed Atozai and other officials of Pakistan’s Mission and Consulate, according to a statement issued by the Foreign Office.

Deputy Prime Minister/Foreign Minister, Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar @MIshaqDar50 arrived in New York for an official visit from 26-28 May.

During the visit, Dar will participate in the UN Security Council’s high-level open debate titled “Maintenance of International Peace and Security: Upholding the Purposes and Principles of the UN Charter and Strengthening the UN-Centred International System.”

The debate will be chaired by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi as China holds the rotating presidency of the 15-member Security Council for the month of May.

Described by Beijing as China’s “signature event” at the United Nations, the debate comes at a time of heightened geopolitical tensions and increasing calls for revitalizing the authority of the UN Charter and reinforcing the role of the United Nations in resolving global crises.

China’s Permanent Representative to the UN Fu Cong had earlier said Beijing’s foremost priority was to restore the authority of the UN Charter and strengthen the role of the world body amid rising global instability.

Speaking at a briefing earlier this month, the Chinese envoy warned that the world was witnessing growing turbulence, widening divisions and mounting pressure on the multilateral system and international law.

In this context, he urged the international community to take urgent collective action to uphold the authority of the UN Charter, reinforce multilateralism and prevent the world from “relapsing into the jungle,” while safeguarding future generations “from the scourge of war.”

Pakistan, meanwhile, welcomed China’s initiative as a timely effort aimed at strengthening multilateralism and reaffirming the central role of the United Nations in addressing increasingly complex global challenges.

On Thursday, Dar will also attend a meeting of the Group of Friends on Global Governance under the theme “Reforming and Improving Global Governance, Working Together to Address Global Challenges.”

The Group of Friends on Global Governance — comprising 43 countries including China, Pakistan and Palestine — was established in December last year as a platform to mobilize collective efforts for reforming and improving the global governance system.

The group focuses on safeguarding the UN Charter, promoting multilateralism and enhancing the representation and voice of Global South countries in international decision-making processes.

Its framework is based on five principles proposed by Chinese President Xi Jinping, including sovereign equality, international rule of law, multilateralism, a people-centered approach and practical action-oriented cooperation.

“Pakistan remains a steadfast supporter of multilateralism and stands ready to contribute constructively to collective efforts for global peace, security and development,” the Foreign Office said.

Dar is also scheduled to address a press briefing on Thursday before concluding his visit and departing for Pakistan.
