Ishaq Dar to attend UN meetings in New York from May 26 to 28

ISLAMABAD: Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar will travel from Beijing to New York on Tuesday to take part in United Nations meetings scheduled from May 26 to 28, according to a Foreign Office press release.

During the visit, Dar is due to participate in an open debate of the United Nations Security Council on Maintenance of International Peace and Security: Upholding the Purposes and Principles of the UN Charter and Strengthening the UN-centred International System. The session will be chaired by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi.

The Foreign Office said Pakistan had welcomed China’s move to convene the discussion and described it as an important step at a time of multiple international challenges. The ministry said the initiative underscored the need to reinforce multilateralism and preserve the central role of the United Nations in responding to complex global issues.

On Thursday, Dar is also scheduled to attend a meeting of the Group of Friends on Global Governance, which will focus on Reforming and Improving Global Governance, Working Together to Address Global Challenges. The grouping includes 43 countries, among them China, Pakistan and Palestine, and was formed in December last year as a platform for coordinated efforts to improve the global governance system.

According to the Foreign Office, Dar will hold bilateral meetings in New York with his counterparts from other countries as well as senior UN officials on the sidelines of the UN engagements.

The ministry said Pakistan continued to support multilateral cooperation and remained prepared to play a constructive role in collective efforts aimed at peace, security and development at the global level.
