16 killed, seven injured in Swat Motorway coach crash

MARDAN: At least 16 people were killed and seven others injured when a passenger coach heading to Swat crashed into a bus parked along the roadside on the Swat Motorway in the Khoro Kotay Saeed Abad area on Monday, Rescue 1122 said.

Rescue 1122 Public Relations Officer Syyed Abbas Shah confirmed the casualty toll. After the incident was reported, Motorway Police personnel, Rescue 1122 teams and residents from nearby areas reached the site and shifted the dead and injured to Mardan Medical Complex Hospital.

According to the Motorway Police, the parked bus had developed a mechanical fault and had been stopped by the roadside when the passenger coach hit it. Hospital and Rescue 1122 officials said the identities of those killed and injured had not yet been confirmed.

Officials at the hospital and Rescue 1122 said most of the victims were from Dir and Bajaur and were travelling home for the Eid holidays. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Minister for Information and Public Relations Shafi Jan expressed grief over the accident and said the injured were being given the best available medical treatment.
