Saudi Hajj 2026 shock: Pilgrims won’t carry bags under new travel plan
Saudi authorities launch a “Hajj Without Luggage” pilot for 2026, letting pilgrims ship baggage from home to Makkah and Madinah hotels. The plan aims to cut airport congestion and speed arrivals.

Saudi authorities have unveiled a new pilot service titled “Hajj Without Luggage” for the 2026 pilgrimage season — a major logistics overhaul aimed at making travel smoother and less physically demanding for millions of pilgrims.
The initiative, introduced by the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah in coordination with aviation and transport authorities, allows pilgrims to send their luggage directly from their home countries straight to their hotels in Makkah and Madinah.
Under the system, baggage will be collected at departure airports, processed through dedicated logistics partners, and transported separately to Saudi Arabia, where it will be delivered directly to accommodation sites.
Officials say the goal is to reduce congestion at airports, shorten waiting times at baggage claim areas, and allow pilgrims to move more easily upon arrival — heading straight to transport buses without handling luggage.
Saudi airline Saudia is part of the rollout and will reportedly support operations covering hundreds of thousands of pilgrims across multiple international destinations.
The project also includes participation from Saudi Post, which will handle large-scale logistics and delivery operations within the Kingdom, ensuring luggage reaches hotels within a short turnaround time.
Authorities say the system could handle over a million bags during the pilgrimage season, making it one of the most ambitious operational upgrades in recent Hajj history.
The move is being positioned as part of a broader effort to modernize Hajj services and improve the overall experience for pilgrims, particularly during peak travel periods when congestion is traditionally at its highest.
