Pakistan drop to eighth in WTC standings after Bangladesh series defeat

SYLHET: Pakistan have fallen to eighth place in the ICC World Test Championship 2025-27 standings after losing the second Test to Bangladesh by 78 runs in Sylhet, a result that completed a 2-0 series sweep for the home side.

The defeat left Pakistan with one win and three losses from four matches. They now have four points and a win percentage of 8.33. Bangladesh, meanwhile, climbed to fifth place after recording their second win in four matches. They have 28 points, along with one defeat and one draw, and a win percentage of 58.33.

Bangladesh’s rise pushed India down to sixth in the standings. India have four wins, four defeats and one draw from nine Tests, with 52 points and a win percentage of 48.15.

Australia continue to lead the table with seven wins and one defeat from eight matches, collecting 84 points and a win percentage of 87.50. New Zealand and South Africa are placed second and third respectively.

Bangladesh complete clean sweep

The hosts wrapped up the match in the morning session on the fifth and final day by taking Pakistan’s remaining three wickets. Pakistan had resumed their chase of 437 but were eventually bowled out for 358 in 97.2 overs.

Pakistan’s effort was led by Mohammad Rizwan, who made 94 from 166 balls and struck 10 fours. Sajid Khan added 28 off 36 deliveries, including five boundaries, as the visitors tried to stretch the contest.

Bangladesh’s bowling was spearheaded by Taijul Islam, who returned figures of 6/120 in 34.2 overs. Nahid Rana took two wickets, while Shoriful Islam and Mehidy Hasan Miraz claimed one each.

Impact on standings

The latest result has significantly affected the lower half of the WTC table, with Bangladesh moving into the top five and Pakistan slipping further down after a difficult start to their campaign.

Pakistan have managed only one victory in their first four matches of the cycle, while Bangladesh have strengthened their position with a series win that also altered India’s standing.

The Sylhet defeat completed a disappointing tour for Pakistan, who were unable to chase down a demanding fourth-innings target despite resistance from Rizwan and lower-order support from Sajid. Bangladesh’s disciplined bowling effort on the final morning ensured the match and the series were sealed without delay.

The result also underlined Bangladesh’s strong showing across their first four matches of the WTC cycle, with the side now holding a better win percentage than India and sitting behind Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and the team in fourth place.
