Three SPSF activists booked after armed clash at Sindh University

JAMSHORO: Police have registered a case against three identified students and 15 unidentified suspects after an armed clash between rival groups of the Sindh Peoples Students Federation (SPSF) at the University of Sindh left one student injured and hostel rooms torched.

The first information report was lodged on the complaint of Sindh University Director Security Rafiq Brohi. The case was registered under sections 324, 504, 147, 148, 149 and 337-H(ii) of the Pakistan Penal Code.

The named suspects in the case are Sarwar Qambrani alias Dada, Hafeez Zardari and Yaqoob Soomro. In addition to them, police also included 15 unidentified persons in the FIR over the violence on campus.

Clash broke out near canteen

According to the complaint, the confrontation began at around 11:30pm on Sunday near the Magsi Canteen, which is adjacent to the university’s Commerce Department. The complaint said dozens of students armed with weapons, sticks and bricks became involved in violent fighting.

During the clash, Azhar Shah, a third-year student of the Institute of Business Administration (IBA), suffered a gunshot wound to his leg. Police said the injured student appeared to be a passerby who was caught up in the violence rather than a participant in the fighting.

He was taken to Liaquat University Hospital for treatment. Police said his condition was stable.

Violence spread to hostel

The unrest later extended to Lal Shahbaz Hostel, where a second round of clashes took place late on Sunday night. During that episode, two hostel rooms were set on fire.

The case marks the latest development in the incident involving rival SPSF groups on the Sindh University campus. The FIR, filed by the university’s security director, sets out the sequence of events from the initial clash near the canteen to the later violence at the hostel.

Police have so far identified three students by name in the case, while the remaining suspects have yet to be identified. The complaint alleges that the groups involved were armed and engaged in fighting that resulted in both injury and property damage inside the university premises.

The incident left one student wounded and caused damage at the hostel after the violence spread beyond the original site of the clash. Authorities have formally initiated legal proceedings following the complaint submitted by the university administration.
