KU teachers continue exam boycott, step up protest over university crisis

KARACHI: Teachers at the University of Karachi have stepped up their protest campaign by deciding to continue a complete boycott of examinations and hold daily demonstrations until the institution’s financial and administrative problems are addressed.

The decision was made at an emergency general body meeting of the Karachi University Teachers’ Society held at the Chinese Memorial Auditorium on Monday. A large number of faculty members attended the meeting, which was the third such gathering convened within a month as unrest at the university continued to grow.

According to the resolution adopted unanimously at the meeting, teachers will keep boycotting all examinations. The faculty body also decided that demonstrations would be staged every day outside the Administration Block at 10:30am.

Faculty escalates campaign

The latest move marks a further intensification of the protest by university teachers, who have linked their agitation to what they describe as unresolved financial and administrative issues at the university. The meeting’s decisions indicate that the teachers do not plan to scale back their campaign in the immediate future.

The Karachi University Teachers’ Society made clear during the emergency session that the protest would continue until the university’s key governance and financial concerns are taken up and resolved. The continuation of the examination boycott means academic activities tied to the exam process will remain affected for now.

Monday’s meeting was significant not only because of the decisions taken, but also because it was the third emergency general body session called within a month. That frequency reflects the persistence of the dispute and the level of concern among faculty members over the situation at the university.

Daily protest plan announced

Under the plan approved at the meeting, teachers will gather outside the Administration Block each day at 10:30am as part of their protest schedule. The demonstrations are to continue alongside the examination boycott, showing that the faculty intends to maintain pressure through both symbolic and practical means.

The teachers’ body took the decisions unanimously, underscoring broad support among those present for continuing the protest. The emergency meeting was attended by a large number of faculty members, suggesting that the issue has mobilised a substantial section of the university’s teaching staff.

The protest centres on the university’s financial and administrative crises, which the teachers say must be addressed before normal academic functioning can resume. With the boycott still in place and daily demonstrations now formally scheduled, the standoff at the University of Karachi appears set to continue.
